When the Apple App Store launched on July 10th, 2008, there were very few apps available, and even fewer sports apps. There was still doubt on how successful the app store would be and if anybody would even create worthwhile content.
Shortly after launch, we saw that there were no targeted soccer (or football, or futbol) apps in the store. There were a few sports apps that provided scores for the major American sports, but that was all. Seeing an opportunity, two guys sitting at a start-up in Ohio decided to jump into the (still unproven) app store. The name of the original app was iFutbol Scores. At the time the thinking was the term soccer was too American and football would be confused with the NFL and college.
iFubol launched at the end of August 2008 at a price of $1.99. It quickly climbed to the top of the sports category and hit the “What’s Hot” section of the App Store home page.
As the App Store exploded in popularity and competition grew, it was time to try something new. Our first tactic was to lower the price to $0.99 which kept the downloads coming. While we had sales in countries on every continent, we were particularity popular in Spanish speaking countries (iFutbol). To increase the audience we changed the name to iSoccer Scores, and downloads increased. In 2009 Apple announced push notifications and iSoccer was quick to implement the new feature. Since incorporating push, iSoccer has sent tens of millions of score notifications to our worldwide audience.
In early 2011 the iSoccer staff thought it was time for a refresh. The entire app has been redesigned with more features and information about the fixtures. Renamed iSoccer Live, the latest version of the app was released in August 2011.
